Gavin –
This has got to be the safest crowd pleasing scent you can get. Smells like a blend between freshly washed Egyptian cotton and a new pair of suade leather shoes. There is a little bit of a creamy gasoline note running ever so gently through it too. At the base is the usual suspects vanilla & sandalwood combo only it does not jut out to be noticed as it often does but instead simply sweetens up the scent and uplifts the cotton and suade notes. Its the complete opposite of a flashy scent, a soft but not weak comfort scent. The strange thing is that it doesnt seem to have much projection yet you get whiffs of it constantly and it fades very slowly so its very long lasting too.
Every time I get a new oil I wear it and visit my parents to see what they say.95% percent of the time they say nothing and I end up having to asking them what they think which is usually something like “quite nice” or “not really” (mainly from my mother side). My father is particularly disinterested and gives very limited comments like “its alright”, “its ok”, or “smells a bit like furniture polish”. Never once has he perked up and said “that smells really good”. Anyway I put this on and actually forgot about it, its such a simple uncomplicated scent it didnt even occur to me to see what their response would be; its not something youd wear to garner a response out of someone. When I arrived my mother was immersed in some tv program and suddenly turned around and said “Whats that smell? Is that a new perfume? THAT one, thats the best one, smells very nice”. I laughed out of surprise and said “But its just a simple soft scent”. Then my dad of all people chipped in and said “Yes that is very nice (a huge compliment from him)” His eyebrows even raised up as he said it. He then asked “What is it, is it an expensive one?” and he looked at me expecting me to say yes. “No” I said “Its just a cheap traditional Arabic type of scent” but that didnt change his mind and he commented again that it smells refined like something more expensive and my mother commented again that it was nice and that I can now stop asking them.
So that reaction surpised me and made me think twice about my judgements of fragrances. I then went online and ordered the same scent from multiple oils sellers thinking there might be a richer even more enchanting version of it elsewhere. It turned out that although they all smelt similar, they had a stronger sandlwood & vanilla base that dominated the fragrance and didnt have that silky suade note either. It appears Al Sunnah has gone a step further and made a more refined classier version of the traditional scent, giving it the extra boost it needed to bring it into competition with modern designer scents.
Honestly I havent had any more compliments from others about it but its not the kind of scent that someone would compliment; kind of like when someone just smells very nice and clean and you just think “mmmm they smell nice” and you get that feeling of wanting to be closer to them. Besides most people wont compliment out of fear of sounding like they may find you attractive (or simply because they dont like you lol)
I think if it had a stronger woody note added to it that would elevate it to even greater heights. Even still I highly recommend you at least sample this and dont judge it straight away. You will be underwhelmed at first. Let it warm up on your skin and release its gentle charm. Think of it like vanilla ice cream, a very high quality vanilla ice cream – with all the fancy flavours you can get vanilla is always going to be the one you appreciate the most, the simple gentle one that just soothes and comforts.
As simple as this scent is, judging by the subtle but profound nuances, clearly this is a well thought out and balanced fragrance chosen by skilled perfume experts 😉
